Segregation/Integration

Black? White? Same? Different? One? All?

HUMAN!

This photograph shows that we are one, skin colour does NOT  matter. Why is anyone better? Why do so many want to be the same. EVERYONE is beautiful.

Plans for the shoot

On this shoot I plan to show the beauty in a different race from the white model that I used on my last shoot I intend to use a black model. I want to show that there is beauty in all types of people, everybody is the same, not one person is better than another, therefore, through my work I want to show the natural beauty in not only a black model, but as well I intend to show the gender differences also, as this week I intend to use a male model opposed to my female model last week. I understand that this may be very controversial to some, so I am insuring that my models are happy to participate in this.

What I hope to achieve

In this shoot I hope that I can take some beautiful shots of my black male model, showing almost the same as what I did with my white female models. I will take close up shots of my model in the studio, featuring different features, such as the eyes, nose ears and mouth. I will also try and take photographs of other parts on the models body, showing their beauty however I can. I hope that after this shoot I can get across to those viewing my work that race doesn't affect how beautiful somebody is, everyone is beautiful in their own way, and I want to show this, and let people know, that they are beautiful and that anybody is, if you just look at them.

Beauty Is In The Eye Of The Beholder

My First Developmental Shoot

Work Record Date 14/11/12

Plans for the shoot
Today I’m going to shoot in the studio using a fellow classmate. The idea of this shoot is to explore ideas of close ups sections of the human body and face. I want to do this to develop my skills in the studio and to become a better studio photographer and to show body image in different ways. There is always an element of beauty in a person, and I want to develop my skills to show this. I want to show the people that are viewing my work as beautiful and to think about a person’s body as an interesting and a thing that we should explore in more detail.

What I hope to achieve
I would like to achieve a shoot that shows a subtle and interesting beauty in different sections of the human body and how it can look different and beautiful, I want the viewer to have a nice positive feeling of my work, and to think that It is actually good and has a sophisticated way. I want to achieve a good shoot in the studio as I have not achieved this as I would have liked to and reached my full potential.

What I actually achieved
On this shoot I had a little trouble with the exposure, so many of my photographs actually did not come out, as I would have liked when I uploaded them, so I edited and printed the ones that I liked, but I went and shot again. These are the problems that I want to improve on and why I wanted to shoot in the studio, because I am not as confident in there. My second shoot was very small and was a lot better than the first; I got the extra pictures that I needed to achieve the purpose that I was looking for.

My favorite shot from both shoots was this picture; however my exposure was so bad that it doesn't actually make a good shot.  There is a fading on the collar bone, this is hard to edit out, and does damage the purpose of the picture; however it does give the picture a mystical and clean picture. This does show a sort of angelic beauty to the picture. This was my best idea and is a beautiful picture, but there are some flaws visible. If I could get this model again I would love to redo this shot as it would be beautiful with the right exposure.

With my extra shoot I caught on film what I was trying to achieve in the first place, but without the technical problems, this is my favorite of this additional shoot. The simplicity of the photo makes it that much more beautiful. The ‘cropping’ or selection of just one small part of the face means that you can see a little of everything, and know what it is, but you don’t get the whole picture. This picture shows what I wanted it to, a simple yet effective way of showing a person’s own individual beauty.

What I am doing to do next;

This next shoot that I intend to do will actually develop from just the beauty, as to the beauty in different people, such as different ethnicity’s or different ages or even different body shapes. This shows the beauty of many different people in many different ways, everybody is beautiful in their own way, and I want to capture this on film. I still want the strong core of beauty running through the shoots though, simple close up shots of my models will show that beauty in the simplest ways.

Form

Work Diary - Form

For this shoot we went into the studio, this was the first time I had been in the studio, and used a studio camera, so I was fairly nervous (added in with my phobia of polystyrene, which we use in the studio to block light) however I overcame this an di think I did a relatively good shoot for my first attempt. Another thing that did disadvantage us was that there was a limited amount of time, and a large group of us using the studio at the same time, again with this I think I overcame it and took pictures efficiently and to the best of my ability in this new environment. Regardless of using the studio I think that this was also a hard brief as to get the shadowing and using the light appropriately to get the outcome that we desired was a challenge, however it was a fun task and was a new experience that I enjoyed thoroughly.  I think the technique I found to show what I wanted was the straight on shot, it showed the light in the way that needed to be shown, instead of manipulating the angle of the camera, I had to manipulate the way that my model was standing, and how the light hit them, not where I was standing on shooting them.  I used both looking towards the camera and facing towards the camera, I found that looking away from the light or turning the models back on it made it look odd, and didn't cause the lighting to show the form in the best way possible.

This is my favorite picture of the shoot, I think that it shows the brief in its entirety, the shadowing looks good and creates a complete view of the model, and shows that they are in fact three-dimensional. I like the use of the black background it creates another dimension to the photograph, as the model is the only focus, I am very proud of this shot.

The shot that I am least pleased with, that I thought would have a potential to be a very good shot is this, by the taller model blocking the light, it would still create shadowing on the smaller model, however it would be a lot less than it would have been if they were on their own, however the picture didn't come out as well as I hoped, and didn't show what I was attempting to reach.

The picture that I think was a complete disaster was this, the models we’re behind the light, and no shadowing occurred that was of any use to me, I was experimenting, as it was my first time in the studio, but I now know that this technique does not work well at all. Also the white background wasn’t pulled down far enough creating the line of the back and the floor, this is not good at all, and ruins the picture.

Idea Development –

This shoot has introduced me to the studio, and made me find my feet on how to capture pictures and to use the lighting and how to manipulate this to produce a shot that is of a good quality, I would love to develop this skill as it is a handy skill to have, as you can also use the techniques that you find in the controlled environment of the studio and relate them to shooting out on location. I have also learnt that shooting people, which again I hadn't done before was actually enjoyable, and that the way you decide to manipulate them can create the picture or it can destroy the picture. It doesn't actually matter on whether the model is attractive or not, the importance is on w=how you make them look, so through this shoot, although I have never been a shallow person, it has made me feel a lot more like looks don’t matter, you can make anyone look beautiful if you can get the right angle and the right lighting, I would love to develop this skill, as it would be able to be related to so much more than some of the other skills that I have developed.  A photographer that I have found that I admire and am almost envious of is Bryan Adams, he has photographed many well known people as he is renowned for his amazing quality work.

The First Step

I took this photograph on our pattern shoot, I think that it shows pattern in a very simplistic way, but also as the angle is low it shows the obscurity of the object, I think that it shows pattern very well, but has a little bit of me in the photograph. We're taking baby steps to become better photographers, so it has meaning, it shows that every step we take will get us to where we want to be, we just have to carry on. I like this photograph, for the way it looks and the meaning that I perceive it to have. This is why it has become my favourite photograph of this shoot, its my first step to becoming a better photographer.
